setting your decluttering goal
I thought decluttering was simple (I was wrong)
I used to think decluttering was simple chore to deal with excess stuff.
Look at a room/ closet/ cabinet, determine how much space you want to free up, and throw the unwanted items in a box. Done.
Then I decluttered my own shoe closet.
That “perfect group” I’d chosen? It looked completely different from how I live my life.
I’d made the classic mistakes that many people make with decluttering.
I treated it like it existed in a vacuum. And my sole focus was on what to get rid of.
Here’s the Truth: Decluttering is Always in Context
The items in your home don’t exist alone.
Every item has emotion attached to it.
You might tell yourself:
“I don’t want to lose memories.”
“I might need it someday.”
“I paid money for that, I can’t just toss it.”
“I’d feel terrible getting rid of a gift.”
Suddenly, your “quick tidy-up” turns into a soul-crushing spiral of guilt.
I thought I needed to be more ruthless. Just let stuff go and move on.
But that approach left me paralyzed every time I opened a cupboard.
Then I made the connection between decluttering and living with intention.
Setting Your Goal
Regardless of the size of your decluttering project, setting your goal at the beginning will bring focus and ease.
Your goal will be your north star, helping you to make decisions with clarity and confidence.
Here are some examples of goal-driven decluttering:
Home Staging: Showcasing your home’s best features to make it easier for potential buyers to envision themselves living there.
Downsizing: Moving to a smaller space to reduce costs and/ or simplify your life.
Well-being: Bringing tidiness and calm to your spaces to create a home energizes and nurtures you.
Interior Design: Curating your possessions to create spaces that balance function and your personal aesthetic.
Why This Works So Well
Decluttering is rarely about the stuff.
Its challenge is the emotional uneasiness tied to it.
Goal-driven decluttering enables you to make decisions with more clarity and confidence.
By focusing on what to keep rather than what to discard, the process becomes more positive and manageable.
